Paratha is a popular Indian flatbread that is enjoyed with various curries, chutneys, or as a standalone dish. It is made using whole wheat flour and can be flavored with different ingredients like herbs, spices, or vegetables. Here's a basic recipe for making paratha:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- Water (as needed)
- Salt (to taste)
- Oil or ghee (clarified butter)
Optional:
- Finely chopped vegetables (such as onions, spinach, or grated carrots)
- Spices (such as cumin seeds or chili flakes)
Instructions:
1. In a mixing bowl, add the whole wheat flour and a pinch of salt. You can also add any optional ingredients like vegetables or spices at this stage.
2. Gradually add water while kneading the dough. Keep adding water and kneading until the dough comes together and is soft and pliable. The dough should not be too sticky or too dry. Let the dough rest for about 15-20 minutes, covered with a damp cloth.
3. After resting, divide the dough into small, equal-sized balls. Take one dough ball and dust it with some flour.
4. Roll the dough ball into a small circle using a rolling pin. Apply some oil or ghee on the surface of the rolled dough.
5. Now, start folding the dough into pleats, similar to a fan or accordion. Once the entire dough is pleated, twist the pleats together to form a spiral.
6. Flatten the spiral-shaped dough with your hands and dust it with some flour.
7. Roll out the dough gently using a rolling pin until you get a round paratha of your desired thickness. Be sure to dust the dough with flour as needed to prevent sticking.
8. Heat a tawa (griddle) or a non-stick pan over medium heat. Once hot, place the rolled paratha on the tawa.
9. Cook the paratha on one side for about 1-2 minutes until you see small bubbles forming on the surface.
10. Flip the paratha using a spatula and apply some oil or ghee on the cooked side. Spread it evenly.
11. Cook the other side for another 1-2 minutes until it turns golden brown. Press the edges gently with the spatula to ensure even cooking.
12. Remove the paratha from the tawa and place it on a plate. If desired, you can lightly crush or tap the paratha with your hands to separate the layers.
13. Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls to make more parathas.
Your parathas are now ready to be served! They can be enjoyed hot with curries, yogurt, pickle, or any other accompaniments of your choice.
